Album reviews Music

Chris Cleave

Rating: NNNNN

Sizzling Brit author of the scarily prescient Incendiary, set to read with Bret Easton Ellis at Harbourfront Friday (September 16).

DIZZEE RASCAL Brand New Day

My son is two years old now, and he can’t get enough of this track (from Boy In Da Corner). There are weird chimes at the beginning, and he did this amazing gyrating dance to it this weekend. The album is awesome. It sounds like all the filth of London on the prowl.

MARTIN GRECH Dali

This track (from Open Heart Zoo) reminds me of my last book – it’s on a mission to self-destruct, building up moments of beauty and then scything them down with monster sharpened metal riffs. I can’t work out if it’s funny, ironic, sad or terrifying. But it’s so huge and bright and shiny, I orbit it like a moth round a lightbulb.

CRAZY HORSE I Don’t Want To Talk About It

I think this might be the title of my next book. I’m writing about despair, which I think is the biggest issue of our time, and how we can get through it to live and laugh and love again. Maybe the first step toward beating despair is to find some beauty in it, and this track from Crazy Horse’s self-titled disc is one of the most beautiful I know.
