What would happen if a member of the Postal Service got drunk on too much Moosehead beer? The answer might be found on Paper Anniversary, on which Weakerthans associate Christine Fellows takes you on a ride through her prairie landscape, employing glockenspiel more often than guitars. While her lyrics are quote-worthy, with narratives that verge on short stories, and her voice has a Joni Mitchell vibe, at times Fellows seems to rely too much on gimmickry. The best song is Feet First, which sounds so much like a Weakerthans track – voice inflections and all – you might be convinced John K. Samson was taking estrogen pills. The songs are warm and enjoyable – but not necessarily enough to give it a fourth listen. Christine Fellows plays the Mod Club Monday (June 27).
