Chromeo She’s In Control (Turbo) Rating: NNN

Rating: NNN

Too soon for a Rockwell revival? Montreal’s Dave 1, aka Bran Van 3000 beatmaker David Macklovitch, and Pee Thug, aka Patrick Gamayal, of Chromeo think not. And evidently neither does Tiga, who was so taken by the New York-based duo’s sleazy-cheesy Trans Am funk that he put out their 80s throwback She’s In Control disc on his Turbo label. It’s hard to say whether Chromeo’s tongue-in-cheek love ballads lasciviously sung through a talkbox over blerping D-Train-style synth grooves will click outside of Quebec (the playa ballad shtick didn’t work for Beck on Midnite Vultures), but it may help some Queen West boutiques unload their pink mesh tank tops.
