Cinerama Cinerama Holiday (Manifesto) Rating: NNN
Since way back in the days of the Wedding Present, David Gedge has been a singles-oriented artist, inspired to do his most creative compositional work within the rigid limitations of the 7-inch format. So it shouldn't be any surprise at all that the same goes for his Cinerama orch-pop project, as can be heard on Cinerama Holiday, the second collection of singles tracks previously issued on his Scopitones label. You get to hear all of Gedge's attempts at moody soundtrack cues, his jangly Wedding Present throwbacks, the poignantly delivered oddball covers (the Carpenters' Yesterday Once More) and, naturally, those hilariously ill-advised stabs at singing songs in languages he doesn't actually speak. Charming.
