Circle Jurk

Rating: NN

Circle Jurk is former Nylons singer Billy Newton-Davis doing innocuous jazz-pop with an out-and-proud gay sensibility. That’s a commendable concept, since despite our supposed liberated ways there’s still a dearth of queer content on the pop charts.

On the downside, the lyrics succeed mainly at being explicit. As you might guess from the project’s name, subtlety isn’t a big concern here, and the result is more than a few unintentionally comedic moments. If the music were more inventive, it might still work, but it’s not, so all we’re left with are goofy, melodramatic accounts of backroom sex over bland coffee-shop pop.

Top track: White Boys

Billy Newton-Davis hits the Gladstone tonight (Thursday, December 11).
