Colonel Claypool’s Bucket of Bernie Brains

Rating: NNNN

The Big Eyeball In The Sky is the first release for Colonel Claypool’s Bucket of Bernie Brains, featuring Les Claypool on bass and vocals, Buckethead on guitar, original P-Funk member Bernie Worrell on keyboards and Brian “Brain” Mantia on drums. What if I told you it’s got some fancy-ass guitars, some serious funk, wacky, groovy rhythms, loads of complex bass lines and goofiness, and draws on a massive range of influences? Would you die of shock? Didn’t think so. This is just what you’d expect. Mind-blowingly ingenious, a great listen at times and a total annoyance when Claypool pulls out all the “I’m such a wacky guy” stops. It’s still impressive, no matter how you spin it, and the longest tune’s a mere 10 minutes.
