Come On Back

Many artists attempt concept albums on which they sing their parents’ old favourites, yet for all their good intentions, the vast majority of the throwback projects should remain private birthday gifts. However, Jimmie Dale Gilmore’s salute to the music of his honky-tonk-playing father, Brian Gilmore, is a rare exception, because the jukebox hits of the 40s and 50s he’s chosen by Hank Snow, Lefty Frizell, Slim Willett, Jimmie Rodgers, Marty Robbins and others are perfectly suited to Jimmie Dale’s nasal crooning, which always sounded strangely anachronistic. Tastefully produced by fellow Flatlander Joe Ely, Come On Back is a gimmick-free dream set for Gilmore, backed by the sound of a working combo that leaves him room to tell these stories in his own time. This really is the stuff Gilmore was born to sing.
