Considering that the Dap-Kings’ raw style of funky R&B is the hot sound and that Daptone has its own recording studio where they could be cutting sessions around the clock, it seems strange that the label should decide the time is right to release some field recordings of unaccompanied gospel singing by obscure amateur performers unknown outside of their county in Mississippi.
Como Now is a solid collection of emotionally charged old-school testifying typical of the days before electric guitars were commonplace. But it’s more than a bit bizarre for the Brooklyn-based Daptone dudes to suddenly get all Alan Lomax when there are vital golden-era soul greats languishing in every major city in the U.S. who could use a bumpin’ blast of the Daptone sound right about now.
