To most Canadians, Greenland is a large, barren landmass that doesn't do anything other than be a neighbour of the Great White North. David Lowery's idea of Greenland isn't much different. While the former Camper Van Beethoven vocalist doesn't sing about the secluded island on his sixth album of original songs, his latest disc conjures up adjectives that could apply equally to the country. Isolation, remoteness, loneliness - this disc is full of heartbreaking reflections on the past. Unlike Greenland the country, though, this record isn't just an anomalous creation. It's filled with Cracker's familiar alt-country rock and plenty of diversity. One minute Lowery's pouring his heart out over slow, epic sounds and the next he's crying out for new companions on the Dylan-style rocker I Need Better Friends. Cracker plays the Mod Club tonight (Thursday, July 20).
