Emo-pop groups really have become the modern equivalent of late-90s boy bands. The emo uniform of camo shorts, skate shirts and straight-brim baseball caps replace boy bands’ goofy matching outfits. “Girl, you know it’s true” R&B ditties have become nasal punkish rants. In Cute Is What We Aim For’s case, it’s about “being fake” or asking the hard questions like “If I died inside, would anyone realize?”
Sure, they play their own instruments, but they do nothing with them but replicate the sounds of their more successful peers. They might as well let professionals write for them, since nothing on this disc gives them any identity of their own. Let’s just say if Simple Plan are the Backstreet Boys, then CIWWAF would be something akin to 5ive.
CIWWAF play the Mod Club Tuesday (June 24).
