Dale Watson Live In London… England! (Audium) Rating: NNNN Rating: NNNN

Rather than release a live disc that’s just a rehash of previously released tunes, Austin honky-tonk hero Dale Watson serves up a choice selection of unreleased keepers he was probably saving for that major-label deal that never happened, along with set staples like Johnny Cash’s I Got Stripes and Ray Price’s Bright Lights And Blonde-Haired Women. Recorded two years back at the Borderline, Live In London sounds superb for a club recording, and the rapt audience never gets in the way. Fans of Shania Twain, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill might be put off by Watson’s new-country broadsides in Real Country Song, Nashville Rash and Country My Ass (with Hank III), but the often hilarious jabs at the Music City establishment should endear him to disenfranchised country traditionalists everywhere. This is the real deal.
