DAMHNAIT DOYLE Davnet (turtlemusik) Rating: Nnn Rating: NNN
Shockingly photogenic ex-Newfie Doyle follows up 2000’s triphoppy Hyperdramatic with a conscious attempt to go organic. Entitled Davnet (it’s how you pronounce her name), the disc mixes lush, glossy girly pop with more interesting roots-charged tunes. There are some moments of generic radio-friendly schmaltz on the album’s low point, Now When The Rain Falls, co-penned with fellow Canuck girl-rocker Dayna Manning, but the majority of tracks have remarkable personality. Doyle gets sassy on Deal With God and warbles a powerful cello-driven elegy for the late Mr. Buckley on Jeff, but the standout is Sinkin’ Stone, a crackly blues triptych that punctuates the disc at exactly the right moments.
