Album reviews Music

Damian Lazarus

Rating: NNNN

It’s not often you get a DJ mix that includes artists like the Stranglers, M83 and Thomas Dolby alongside twisted electro-house and acid revisionism, but the combo isn’t as odd as you might think. This is the second volume in the Suck My Deck series, and its theme is the edgier side of dance music. The last one, mixed by Ivan Smagghe, was well received, and this one is just as good, though Lazarus favours new wave influences over Smagghe’s industrial tendencies. Keep an eye out for Lazarus – he’s only recently built a rep as a DJ, but there’s already a good buzz around him, and this mix strengthens the case.
