It's unfortunate that this four-song EP, the debut release from the Toronto pop trio, isn't considerably longer, mostly cuz it kicks ass. Led by singer/bassist/local scenester Jen Markowitz, the band mixes too-catchy hooks from the likes of retro Brit-pop like the Smiths with contemporaries like the Organ and a kind of swaggering girl-punk attitude. The songs aren't super-complex or anything, but they each accomplish the goal of sounding fun and dancey without any element of lame pretension. They've been together since 05, and if this EP is any indication of the band's talent, then it's kinda strange that more people haven't caught on. Maybe now they will.
Dance Yourself to Death play Friday (February 23) at Ciao Edie Roxx.
