When trumpet's good, it's real good, and David Buchbinder is a fine trumpet player. Leader of the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band, he's also the creator, composer and producer of Shurum Burum Jazz Circus, which employs 11 musicians and seven movement artists, apparently wowed crowds in 2004 and is the basis for this CD. You get tight fusion with bop, Roma and Middle Eastern elements, and, of course, klezmer along with allusions to contemporary classical composers like Darius Milhaud. Innovatively rhythmic and high-energy, its Mingus influence is obvious. I'm not one for a lot of fusion, but this meanders without becoming annoying, and can be quite moving. Plus, it inspires curiosity about what the movement artists might do.
Buchbinder launches his CD at the Rex tonight and Friday (November 10-11).
