David Celia Organica (Seedling Music) Rating: NNN
David Celia plays Mezzrow's Sunday (March 23).
With Bush on his dynastic crusade of anti-terrorist terror, there's something to be said for David Celia's brand of pure musical escapism. Formerly of local band Invisible Inc, Celia makes sunny, lackadaisical acoustic pop with a folkie ethos and lyrics about his dopey dog, caterpillars and the trials and tribulations of procrastination. If you can deal with the perma-grin, it's sweet and fun. With his swingy tempos and snappy guitar hooks and a few neat twists in the arrangements, Organica, Celia's first album, is a flashback to early Lowest of the Low and less edgy mid-90s Sloan. I could do without the sensitive instrumentals.
