David Guetta

One Love (EMI)

Rating: NNN

French house DJ David Guetta has slowly combined pop elements with big-room club music, and it comes together on his fourth album. Pairing up with Chris Willis, Estelle, Kid Cudi and others makes for impressive variety. Unfortunately, this comes at a price: will.i.am appears three times (on two original tracks and a Black Eyed Peas remix), and his redundancy is a bit unbearable.

However, the album also finds Guetta mixing it up on the production side with great results. Collaborations with house oddballs Tocadisco on the clap-and-drum-laden Toyfriend and Afrojack on the dreamy synth-stravaganza If We Ever are standouts. One Love goes surprisingly deep, but an instrumental companion disc would’ve been a nice touch.
