Though more fully realized than the previous solo projects of the Clean main man David Kilgour, A Feather In The Engine still suffers from that quaint feel of a four-track home recording. There are some decent Velvets-inspired song ideas sketched out, with Kilgour’s heavily effected guitar setting the tone, but any lyrics that arise seem tossed on as an afterthought. It sounds as if Kilgour made A Feather In The Engine as a calling card for future soundtrack work just in case the next reunion of the Clean doesn’t pan out.
