Ship Of Dreams will sound pleasantly familiar to fans of Dire Straits, since David ‘Mark’s Brother’ Knopfler co-founded that band but left in favour of a solo career in 1983. David’s musical sensibility and vocal style are quite similar to his brother’s, and most of the tunes on this record are reminiscent of the Romeo And Juliet side of Dire Straits: piano- and guitar-based ballads with tinges of country. At 16 gentle tracks, things get repetitive, but there’s nothing like listening to a confident songwriter and skilled lyricist to emphasize just how amateurish the amateurs are.
