DEADBEAT

Rating: NNNN

Until now, Scott Monteith’s Deadbeat project has been a receptacle for his ambient techno take on dub reggae. He follows that model for the first few tracks of Journeyman’s Annual, but you soon discover the Montreal producer has widened the definition of the Deadbeat sound.

This time around also delves into tougher dancehall rhythms, as well as inviting in some guest vocalists to toast over his digital dub vibes. The only downside is that this new angle makes the mellower stuff seem overly sleepy, although it does provide balance for the club-friendly dancehall-inspired beats.
