Efrem Shultz of Death by Stereo doesn’t have a bad voice. When he sings, his voice can be full of character. Too bad he has to ruin everything by throwing in a snarling shout every few seconds. It makes him sound like he’s puking. Death by Stereo’s barrage of metal-meets-angry-punk is as intricate as it is aggressive, with well-constructed melodies and phrasing. Ultimately, however, the basic routine of following a melodic set-up with a barrage of screaming is just too formulaic to be impressive.
