Dedication soundtrack

Rating: NNN

Justin Theroux played a frustrated director in David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, and now he’s taking on the role in real life, popping his directorial cherry with this dark-humoured rom-com. Theroux also happens to be hooked up with San Fran’s cutesy and chaotic noise pop kids Deerhoof, who work with Ed Shearmur to curate this impressive soundtrack (especially so for a film starring Mandy Moore).

As expected, there’s plenty of Deerhoof, including a sonically recharged mix of their Matchbook Seeks Maniac from Friend Opportunity, as well as two exclusives. Plus, they’ve backed Shearmur on his moody, introspective instrumentals. Strokes, Lightning Bolt and currently hyped-up fem trio Au Revoir Simone also appear.

However, when it comes to high drama, you really can’t beat the bottled angst of a Cat Power cut, Back Of Your Head from Moon Pix, a song that will surely play in the background as co-star Billy Crudup goes through his obligatory ‘How did I lose her?’ phase.
