DETECTIVE KALITA

DETECTIVE KALITA The Night We Ate The Cake (Kelp) Rating: NNN

Rating: NNN

With Detective Kalita’s The Night We Ate The Cake, underground super-producer Andy Magoffin completes an awesome indie rock hat trick. The Detective Kalita disc, a set of quirky, wobbly two-minute-miracle pop ditties, demonstrate this Ontario six-piece’s knack for oddball songwriting and tasty melodic hooks, as well as an unabashed fascination with Bob Dylan. The tunes are all over the place, from twangy saloon foot-stompers to hushed lovelorn laments, tied together by rickety acoustic guitars, nifty pedal steel accents from Sandro Perri (aka Polmo Polpo) and Magoffin’s characteristic brass riffs. Detective Kalita skulk into Clinton’s tonight (Thursday, December 4).
