Detective Kalita play Astoria Athens (865 Bloor West) Saturday (May 27).
I remember seeing some of the guys in Kalita a few years back covering Huey Lewis and the News's The Power Of Love and making it sound sweet, genuine and nothing like the original. On the Toronto band's second full-length release, singer Andy Swan and friends go down that same path, blending acoustic instrumentation with soulful, sleepy melodies and coming up with an entire album's worth of near-perfect indie pop. While Swan's earnest voice nearly overpowers the music at times, songs like Grease The Streets show off one of the grooving-est base lines ever, compliments of Weakerthans bassist Greg Smith. Part sombre, part surprising, The Michael Parks deserves to be heard.
