Seeking a singer for one song on their new project, Torontonians Joseph Shabason and Kieran Adams (the killer sax/drum section from acts like Bonjay, Thunderheist and most notably Destroyer) recruited Carmen Elle. But when the song, Born Again, racked up thousands upon thousands of SoundCloud plays as well as international attention, they brought her in full-time.
Those who follow the local music scene will recognize Elle as the singer/guitarist behind Army Girls. It's kind of ironic that DIANA are the band to launch her, since Perpetual Surrender doesn't feature much of the guitar heroics she's known for, but the album was written before she came on board. It's much more in line with Shabason and Adams's work on Destroyer's soft rock epic Kaputt, with its smooth sax, jazzy rhythms and 80s synth pop, but Elle's breathy voice meshes remarkably well. Their next album features Elle as a full collaborator, so enjoy the dreamy summer vibes while you can.
