Countless Broadway stars have released mainstream records, but many of these singers still make the same mistake: they sound like they're starring in a play. Tony Award winner Idina Menzel falls into this trap on her third effort.
There's no doubt that Menzel can sing; her soaring pipes are among Broadway's best. But on a number of her soft-?rock-?meets-?light-?R&B tracks it's as if she's reprising her role in Wicked, which is grating on a pop album. Her lyrics could use work, too.
Opener I Stand, with its chorus "As I stand for the power of change... I hope for a hero to save me," sounds like an ode to Barack Obama.
Menzel plays the Danforth Music Hall November 7.
