DIO Killing The Dragon (Spitfire) Rating: NNN Rating: NNN
Remaining steadfastly unswayed by just about every musical advance ever made since he left Sabbath and formed Dio, Ronnie James Dio and his current lineup enter with a good old galloping metal riff on track one (also the title track), setting the tone for the entire album. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It's nice that Dio show a socially conscious side on Hell Is For Children -- originally intended for the Children of the Night charity (aimed at rescuing children from street prostitution) but rejected for its depressing lyrics. Unfortunately, only metalheads are ever going to hear it. That's because while this offering might please the converted who enjoy medieval imagery, it certainly isn't going to recruit any new fans. Dio play the Docks Saturday (July 6).
