Disc review: Punk Goes Crunk by Various Artists

Rating: NN

Actually, the title here is a bit of a misnomer in more ways than one: this isn’t exclusively a tribute to dudes like Lil John so much as an overview of the last 15 years of commercial hip-hop. Also, most of the bands involved don’t seem all that punk to begin with. No less confusing are the arbitrary cover song choices made by yawn-inducing acts like Say Anything, Forever the Sickest Kids and Emanuel, who reinterpret everything from ODB to Will Smith.

Cute in theory? Maybe, but when the songs aren’t just lazy and boring, like Secret Handshake’s abysmal take on the already annoying I Wish, by Skee-Lo, they’re just kinda pointless, and very few actually leave any lasting impression. It’s probably better to just forget about this one and wait for the next hilariously ironic concept to come along.
