Album reviews Music

Discs

Rating: NNNN

It’s about time Toronto MC and Drop The Beat actor Michie Mee got around to releasing some new music. Fortunately, the rhymes thrown down during the 20 cuts on The First Cut Is The Deepest — not to mention the myriad phone messages — are far more original than the album’s title. While an eclectic crew bring the funk, Mee takes aim at major labels, men, radio and critics from long ago, while painting the (presumably) true story of an ambitious young woman more interested in hanging with the boys at the studio than with Sontag at the library. Chuck D gives a brief shout-out, the Stones are quoted and, while Lauryn Hill is bound to be namechecked, Mee has cut a furious sound all her own.KH
