When the bossa nova craze hit Germany, MPS label boss Joachim Berendt split south to Rio in search of Brazilian guitar guru Baden Powell. The baron of the Black Forest got some sun ‘n’ sand, and today — thanks to the culturally sussed people running Polydor Japan — we can enjoy the late six-string maestro getting funky in a sextet setting with drum dynamo Milton Banana. The percolating percussion accompanying Powell’s charging spirit incantations might be a touch unruly for fans of Powell’s slinkier Spanish strokes, but the afro-house crowd will find loads of beats to dig. The more bangin’ Baden the better, I say. TP
