Ahh, to be alive, in love and living in sunny California. That pretty much sums up the spirit of k.d. lang's Invincible Summer, a shamelessly upbeat, sugary ode to the West Coast. To her credit, lang delivers the sentiment with tongue partly in cheek. The swirling, candy-coated Summerfling smacks of Bacharach with its overwrought synth swirls and girly backing voices, and while the vibe might not work terribly well once February rolls around, lang's voice -- vivid, supple and absolutely lovely -- makes this a welcome return.
