It was a sad day for fans of his uniformly brilliant compilations when Café del Mar DJ Jose Padilla announced he was leaving Ibiza and his decks behind to pursue his own music. However, the series is far too lucrative to fold, so enter DJ Bruno to carry the torch.
To his credit, Bruno takes risks -- a reworked Bush track is surprisingly solid, and even Moby turns up. Elsewhere, though, Volumen Siete sounds more like somebody's mixed tape than a fully realized chill-out soundtrack to sunset (or sunrise). Padilla knew the trick with Café del Mar wasn't so much getting the right songs as getting them in the right order, so each built on the mood created by the last. Evidently, a tougher task than at first appears.
