It's impossible to know how deeply Woodstock, NY-based folk/pop singer Dar Williams dug into her own life for inspiration, but few put songs across with the utter conviction found on The Green World.
Swinging between uptempo, pop-hued corkers and meditative story songs filled with characters so real you can almost smell their cologne, Williams never misses a step, imbuing the lot with supple phrasings and a wink that invites us into her orbit for a closer look. That her singing is consistently understated but still dazzling only emphasizes the power of her lyrics. The cult of Dar is bound to expand. Williams plays Lee's Palace September 26.
