While their remarkable f#a# debut was a sublime studio creation, the past few years have seen Montreal's godspeed you black emperor! turn their attention to damaging ears from onstage. The searing energy of a godspeed live set is at the heart of the group's long-awaited Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven set.
This is a massive-sounding record, as huge as you'd expect from a nine-piece band. The four long pieces spread over two CDs build on the familiar godspeed template of sprawling soundscapes sketched out by hazy guitar lines, lilting strings, found sounds and errant voice-overs. The mood mellows slightly on the drone-heavy second disc -- all the better to close your eyes and dream to. Godspeed you black emperor! play the Bloor Cinema tonight (Thursday, October 5).
