The second volume of remixes steered by French afro house innovator Frederic Galliano continues the DJ's mission of updating traditional Malian beats with sympathetic house production.
No idea is too outside. DJ Spider heats up the desert sounds of Ibrahim Dicko with a vaguely latin stomp, IG Culture turns Nahawa Doumbia's loose-limbed guitar cut into a two-step garage classic, Natty Bass Sound System brings the dub, and Berlin minimalist Pole strips everything away but the heartbeat. It's all very funky and innovative, but it's also very close to what went down on Volume 1. As Galliano's own balophone-laced remix suggests, perhaps the better idea would have been to release a live album from the DJ's recent and deadly live set, which truly took the afro-fusion concept to another level.
