Bill Laswell's grand concept of bringing in a couple of the world's top South Asian percussionists to fuse classical tabla rhythms and drones with contemporary beats might have sounded more interesting had Laswell not been making that same record for the last 10 years.
Tala Matrix duplicates the familiar Axiom template. Zakir Hussain, Talvin Singh, Trilok Gurtu and Karsh Kale tap out driving tabla runs over which Laswell lays his ponderous bass lines and synth washes. Adventurous, but only in an early-90s way. Hussain's solo tribute to his teacher and father, Allarakha, makes for a moving closing, but it comes way too late to save this mess. Singh drums solo at the Phoenix Wednesday (October 11).
