There's a refreshing live atmosphere to the beats of Toronto house hero Nick Holder. Much of that organic feel is in the layers of percussion in his grooves, but it goes well beyond the beats, reshaping Holder's entire tracks.
Underground Alternatives is in many ways his most ambitious project yet, more a collection of complete songs than just club-friendly cuts. The roiling percussion underneath America Eats Its Young is electrified by a scathing and smart bit of spoken word by Jemeni, while a big double bass line and a frail sax riff in Black Jazz (You're Gonna Love Me) are as close to live jazz/house as one man in a basement studio can get. Nothing touches the closing track, Friday Night At Movement, however. With a rolling piano hook and another obese bass line, Holder nails the loose latin/house vibe of the city's best monthly party dead on.MG
