A different concept in the DJ mix format, this compilation features three New York techno DJs throwing down together. Starting off with three classics by Kevin Saunderson, Blake Baxter and Oliver Lieb, the mix stays on the dark and sleazy side characteristic of New York techno, with almost all the tracks coming from their Sonic Groove label. A city not particularly known for techno, NYC has managed to piece together an identity from elements of the sounds coming out of Detroit, Germany and London: less experimental than German techno, not as busy and aggressive as the British, but also without the odd, pretty sadness of Detroit's synth melodies. There's a noisy, lo-fi quality to many of the tracks, and a stripped-down toughness less evident in some other techno offshoots. A compilation that's in touch with the roots without being purist or retro.
