With the alt-grunge phase that briefly made them stars now long gone, credit should be given to Garbage for at least trying to evolve on their third album. In addition to the usual power-rock wailing, beautifulgarbage features triphop, fake DJ scratching and a vaguely big band-ish number that recasts howler Shirley Manson as a torch diva. For all Butch Vig's nifty production tricks, the gimmick factor of each cut sounding different can't hide the fact that there are no songs here. Beautifulgarbage also comes with an interactive program allowing you to remix tracks yourself. There is, sadly, no button for "delete."
