Seven years after Supermetalgroup Down -- a side project of members from Pantera (Philip Anselmo), Corrosion of Conformity (Pepper Keenan) and Crowbar (Todd Strange, Jimmy Bower) -- released NOLA, comes II: A Bustle In Your Hedgerow, with Pantera bassist Rex Brown replacing Strange and the addition of Crowbar's Kirk Windstein. Drawing heavily on Black Sabbath and their own late-80s/early-90s Southern rock/metal roots, II evokes a nostalgic pang for the long-lost dark rock clubs of yore. On heavier tracks like Lysergic Funeral Procession and New Orleans Is A Dying Whore, Anselmo's bellowing growl rides chunking guitar riffs and licks, pounding drums and complex song structure, then mellows out nicely for the more ambient efforts. A Hammond B3 makes a cameo on the surprising Stained Glass Cross. This album will be much appreciated, like a bottle of Wild Turkey in a sea of crantinis.
