AIR/alessandro BARICCO City Reading (Virgin) Rating: NN Rating: NN
The problem with drugs is that the most asinine ideas can somehow take on immense meaning. In an altered state, the idea of French pop band Air releasing a record in which they play behind the readings of Italian author Alessandro Baricco might sound grand, but in the real world you've got to shake your head. Baricco reads with dramatic flair about gunfighters, whores and the darkness while Air turn on the New Age machine and churn out bland soundscapes built around wind chimes, single piano notes, acoustic guitars and rumbling thunder. Further proof that the gap between profound and pompous isn't that wide.
