Dani Siciliano Likes…. (K7) Rating: NNNN

Rating: NNNN

We’ve heard Dani Siciliano, who’s just released her debut album, as the voice on much of sample mangler Matthew Herbert’s well-known tracks. Texture-wise, there’s some resemblance to her collaborator’s oeuvre, but her approach is moodier and more rooted in the song. Her cover of Nirvana’s Come As You Are twists it into a dark, brooding lo-fi bossa-nova of sample slices. Many reviewers have pointed out some links to Nico (the singer, not the drum ‘n’ bass producer), but ironically, Siciliano’s drawing just as much from the raw skeletal shuffle of d ‘n’ b as she is from the pop noir tradition of the former Velvet Underground singer.
