The Elected are a side project of Rilo Kiley’s Blake Sennett, doing soft, dreamy alt-country with some electronic touches of lo-fi drum machines and sound effects. But Me First doesn’t come across as contrived as that reads. For the most part it sounds like what it is – a bunch of indie musicians having some fun in their spare time. Even with the electronic touches, Me First resembles a classic album from the 70s – rooted in traditional songwriting and folky instrumentation but still approaching the recording process with an experimental mindset and a desire to be forward-thinking.
