The seventh volume of the officially sanctioned Bob Dylan Bootleg Series, No Direction Home is a two-disc set of early live recordings, demos and studio outtakes that doubles as the soundtrack to a new Martin Scorsese documentary (screening at the Toronto International Film Festival September 17, out on DVD September 20). This odds-‘n’-sods collection leans toward Dylan’s politically pointed recordings from the 60s along with some intriguingly different alternate takes of Blonde On Blonde tunes, rarely heard publishing demos and some historic concert performance moments. The Town Hall version of Masters Of War from 1963 packs a wallop that still resonates today. It kinda makes you wonder whatever happened to that whole socially conscious side of popular music.
