Precious Fathers play Rancho Relaxo Saturday (September 17). Rating: NNN
This debut album from Vancouver's Precious Fathers offers up a collection of instrumental rock ditties squarely in the post-rock vein. They manage to hit all the requisite tropes dead-on: arpeggiated guitar lines, simple drum work, driving bass. They even sneak in a few sly trumpet lines. It's the kind of jamming that unfortunately doesn't quite transcend the generic. Picture the unassuming offspring of all your favourite mid-90s Chicago bands, sort of like if Tortoise had a kid that needed to grow up a bit.
