Find out when the Deadly Snakes hit Lee's Palace Friday (September 23). Rating: NNN
When the Deadly Snakes sat down to itemize the musical touchstones for their ambitious Porcella album (which range from the recordings of the Zombies, Love and Captain Beefheart to Nico's Chelsea Girl), conspicuously absent from the list were Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Tom Waits, who seem to be the primary inspirations for the album's unsettlingly off-kilter orchestrations. Porcella is the Deadly Snakes with strings, but there's also some mellotron, toy piano, horns and various other noisemaking devices. Unfortunately, their "let's try this" approach would've benefited from more carefully considered arrangements to reduce unnecessary clutter and make better use of the wider variety of instruments at hand. It still sounds like a Deadly Snakes album, and hopefully it'll all come together in performance.
