Rating: NNNN

Stripped of his backing band and the accompanying wall of noise, Paul Weller sounds positively re-energized on the mostly acoustic Days Of Speed. Heading out on tour by himself to strum through tunes from his back catalogue, the Modfather clearly found what excited him about playing music in the first place. Despite the stripped-down solo arrangements, there’s a real energy to these shots at Brand New Start, English Rose, Above The Clouds and Town Called Malice, while the shock inclusion That’s Entertainment, introduced as “an old, old, old song,” sounds as fierce as it did 21 years ago.
