Rating: N

Maybe Mariah’s breakdown was caused by the sudden realization that she’s been singing the same bloody song her entire decade-long career. This bland sameness is glaringly obvious after listening to Greatest Hits. Sure, some are syrupy ballads and some are clubby dance tracks. But the sad fact is that even those are hard to distinguish from each other, despite guest appearances by urban icons like Luther Vandross and Jay-Z. The songs are all way overproduced and sound strangely dated. The album is set up in chronological order, so you can revisit past events in your life according to which Carey cut was big at the time.
