A mixed CD by Belfast DJ David Holmes — the kingpin of the imaginary soundtrack — isn’t going to be your straight-up throwdown of his favourite tracks. Holmes digs deep in the crates for Come Get It I Got It, chopping up tunes by Sixto Rodriguez, Muddy Waters, Johnny Otis and Johnny Jones’ sleazy cover of Purple Haze, but it’s the backstory that’s most interesting here. Under the guise of the Free Association, Holmes shows his understanding of the genre by creating a handful of his own twisted 60s soul tunes, mixing his dusty funk with that of the Staple Singers into one disturbingly smooth 60 minute groove. Get down.
