Discs: Destroyer

Even before the New Pornographers started amassing critical love letters, fame-fearing songwriter Dan Bejar was already getting cold feet about the whole supergroup deal. Instead of soaking up the momentary attention, he returned to the studio with Destroyer cohorts John Collins (Evaporators), Scott Morgan (Loscil), Jason Zumpano and Stephen Wood to create a song cycle concerning the rock-star myth. Although the messages are cleverly coded in rock-opera language, the inspiration of Ziggy Stardust and Tommy is just as obvious as the New Pornographers jabs woven into The Sublimation Hour. But in trying to bury the Pornographers he’s made them a focal point.
